Community-Managed Microfinance: A new and sustainable approach to microfinance for the poor

The Community-managed Microfinance (CMMF) course exposes participants to best practice by the leading practitioner organisations that are promoting savings-based community-managed microfinance. 

The course covers 5 key areas:

  • General introduction, covering principles and emerging best practice; the scale and extent of practitioner programmes; methodological background and emerging issues
  • Practice sessions illustrating the VS&L methodology used by CARE, CRS and Plan International, with reference to methodological variations promoted by Oxfam
  • Management Information Systems for CMMF
  • Approaches to programme design
  • Implementation planning and budgeting


Course Objectives

The objectives of this course are for participants to:

  • To understand the basic rationale for CMMF and to understand what type of target group most benefits from the system
  • To gain familiarity with the training approach and tools and make informed choices about which system of combination of systems best suits their clients and staff
  • To be able to track and measure programme performance
  • To be able to design and cost a CMMF programme

Outline

Day 1:

  • Distinctions between CMMF and other MF methodologies
  • Global experience in CMMF
  • Emerging issues in CMMF

Day 2 & 3: Practice in CMMF:

  • Daily savings techniques
  • Operation of a Social (insurance) Fund
  • Savings/share purchase
  • Loan disbursement and repayment
  • Fund distribution/dividend payments

Day 4:

  • Management Information Systems: concepts, operation and analysis
  • Monitoring and evaluation: emerging practice and results
  • Principles and tools in programme design

Day 5: On day 5 a "sampler" version of the course will be open to participants who did not attend the full week's course, as a 1 day introduction to the course.
