Deb BurandMs. Burand will be joining the University of Michigan Law School Faculty this July 2008 as Director of its newly launched International Transactions Clinic, a clinic aimed at giving law students an opportunity to document and negotiate cross-border transactions supporting businesses operating at the base of the pyramid.

Since January 2008, Ms. Burand has been working as an independent consultant specializing in increasing financial access to women, policy and regulatory issues affecting microfinance, and growing businesses at the base of the pyramid in emerging markets, particularly microfranchising.

She also has worked for two microfinance global networks - FINCA International from 2001 - 2004 and, more recently, at Grameen Foundation where she served, until January 2008, as the Foundation's Executive Vice President, Strategic Services.  At Grameen Foundation she oversaw the work of its Capital Management and Advisory Center, Technology Center, Social Performance Team, Monitor and Evaluation Team, and Strategic Planning Team.

Ms. Burand is the President of Women Advancing Microfinance (WAM) International, and Chairman of Microfinance Opportunities.  She also serves as a member of the investment committee of a $75 million microfinance investment fund managed by Deutsche Bank and sits on the Advisory Council of MicroVest, a specialized fund investing in microfinance.

Prior to entering the microfinance industry, Ms. Burand held senior, internationally-focused positions at the Federal Reserve Board and US Treasury Department. She also worked as an international corporate attorney at the law firm, Shearman & Sterling, in New York.

Ms. Burand is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and former International Affairs Fellow of the Council. She is a freelance writer and has published in magazines on topics ranging from travel to art to dogs. She holds a joint graduate degree from Georgetown University, (JD/MSFS).
