Nathan Were is a Digital and Access to Finance Specialist with over 12 years’ experience mostly working in Sub Saharan Africa. He currently leads access to finance initiatives targeting smallholders at the International Finance Corporation of The World Bank Group based in Nairobi, Kenya. Prior to IFC, Nathan worked with CGAP a financial inclusion think-tank housed within The World Bank Group supporting financial service providers design financial products to service smallholder families in Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda. He also spent four years at a global MFI – FINCA managing a large-scale financial inclusion program sponsored by the MasterCard Foundation enabling FINCA deploy alternative delivery channels [agency, mobile, process automation and mobile financial services] in Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania. Nathan started his career at Uganda Microfinance Limited as a Credit Officer and has also worked with Equity Bank as a Product and Research Development Officer and the Microfinance Support Centre as a Market and Product Specialist all in Uganda. He has also under-taken numerous consulting assignment for GiZ, The Grameen Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, CGAP among others.

 

Nathan is a fellow of the Harvard Business School program on financial inclusion and holds a Masters in Rural Finance [with a distinction] from the State University of Bergamo, Italy and a certification in Digital Money from Tufts University and Digital Frontiers Institute.
