Rafe Mazer is a consumer protection and behavioral research expert based out of CGAP’s Nairobi office. His work utilizes innovative field experiments and research methods that source behavioral insights to develop new and more effective approaches to financial consumer protection. He partners with governments and financial service providers to implement consumer research and behavioral experiments that explore how consumers understand, choose, and utilize financial products, and what this means for effective consumer protection. His research has explored key consumer protection issues such as product disclosure, sales practices and incentives, dispute resolution mechanisms, and the impact of digital delivery channels on consumer behavior in emerging products such as mobile money and digital credit. His work to date includes research in markets such as Ghana, Kenya, Mexico, Malaysia, Nicaragua, Peru, the Philippines and Tanzania.
