Gerhard Coetzee leads Customer and Provider Solutions at CGAP (working on customer centric business models, financial innovations for smallholder households and digital finance products and services beyond payments).  He holds an appointment as Extraordinary Professor at the University of Stellenbosch Business School. Earlier he was Head of Inclusive Banking at Absa Bank (South Africa), the founder and Director of the Centre for Inclusive Banking in Africa and Professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Pretoria.  He is published widely and worked in several countries, the majority in Africa. Gerhard holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Pretoria, South Africa.  He is known for his ability to apply himself from policy to implementation. Career highlights include being Secretary of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into Rural Finance in South Africa (commissioned by President Nelson Mandela), and managing a portfolio of five million low-income clients at Absa where he led the implementation of a branchless banking strategy.
