Managing Risk in Rural & Agricultural Finance

Klaus Maurer

Rural and agricultural finance (RAF) is exposed to significant production, market and price risks.  This is the reason why banks and other financial service providers (FSPs) have been extremely reluctant to engage in rural and agricultural finance. This course will explore risks in agriculture, as well as in agricultural finance, discussing risk management approaches for farms and FSPs.

Through interactive discussions, practical examples and group presentations this course will position participants to distinguish main types and sources of risk, analyze risk management techniques, examine the trade-offs between lowering costs and reducing risk, and identify key elements and examples of good practice in managing risk in RAF.

Intended Audience: This course is targeted at participants engaged in rural and agricultural finance at various levels, including practitioners from financial service providers, policy makers from relevant Government agencies as well as officers from international development organizations.
