Hans Hekkenberg has worked for many years in the banking industry and ING. He has held several positions such as IT Project and Program Manager, and Operational Risk Manager. During his career, he has set up and managed new risk departments in which he gained extensive international experience. He graduated as Business Economist at the University of Groningen. Later he made the transition to the microfinance sector, working as an independent consultant to advise institutions; and provide training in risk management, risk self-assessment, and strategy. He has conducted trainings and workshops for individual MFIs, credit unions, and cooperatives. He has also led training of trainer courses. Furthermore, he has experience in conducting due diligence assessments and seminars. In this capacity, he has gained extensive international, practical experience in various countries in South East Asia, Central Asia, Eastern Europe, Eastern and Western Africa, and South and Central America. Hans is experienced in risk management with a special focus on non-financial risks. Throughout his career, he has been actively involved in the development and practical use of tools and methods for the management of non-financial risks. During trainings and workshops, he uses a balanced approach between theoretical concepts and practical approaches. He has always been active in committees and boards of various professional international bodies. Amongst other organizations, he served for more than ten years as chair of the Audit committee of Oikocredit. He is now a member of the technical working group of the RIM Initiative, working on the graduation model for MFIs.
